1st Bangor twice came from behind to salvage a point in this match but will consider it two points dropped in the race for promotion.
The match started lively with the teams trading blows in the opening 15 minutes. Newington went close with a header excellently cleared off the line by 1st Bangor's Ben Gourley while Jamie McKenzie brought a flying stop from Newington's keeper to deny 1st Bangor at the other end.
Despite all the skill on show, it was a defensive mix up that brought the opening goal. A seeming lack of communication between 1st Bangor's outstanding young keeper Craig Bell and veteran left-back Mark Liddell resulted in the Newington number 10 picking Liddell's pocket from a throw out and then slotting home to put Newington 1-0 up after 20 minutes.
The end to end action continued with George Chelariu causing Newington problems, and it was 1st Bangor who struck next, Gary Morrow whipping in a great corner for Michael Corkum to slam a well struck volley past the Newington keeper to make it 1-1.
With neither side able to keep possession and dominate the match, the frantic pace continued and it was Newington who again took the lead just before half-time. This time their midfielder stealing through unchallenged and picking out a great finish to give Newington the lead going into the half-time break.
In the second half, the pace of the game began to settle with chances at a premium and defences on top. 1st Bangor, needing to go for it, brought on strikers Chris Scott and Stephen Cairnduff, and winger Luke Kelly and the change almost immediately paid off with Cairnduff firing just over after a great through ball by Liddell.
With Newington firmly on the back foot the pressure began to build and it was a fine flowing move, started off by the lively David Morrow which finally brought the equaliser. Morrow playing the ball into Scott on the edge of the area who slid through to Aaron Caldwell to race to the byline then square back a perfect pass for Scott to run onto and sweep into the far corner past the keeper to make it 2-2.
In the dying moments it could have been even better for 1st Bangor, Scott heading home from a Chris Nicholl free kick only to see his strike ruled out harshly for offside.
1st Bangor will now be hoping to get back to winning ways against Kilroot Rec next week.
