1st Bangor kept their promotion hopes alive after coming from two goals down to beat Groomsport 3-2 on a sunny day in Groomsport.
With 1st Bangor knowing only a win would keep them in the hunt for promotion they started the brighter in the sun with Ryan Oliver and Aaron Caldwell causing the Groomsport full-backs no end of problems. With the pressure mounting it was inevitably 1st Bangor who went closest to open the scoring, Chris Scott whipping in a great ball behind the Groomsport defence only for Georgie Chelariu to be an inch away from connecting and giving 1st Bangor the lead.
The pressure continued with Ben Gourlay and Jeff McNamara controlling possession against Groomsport's midfield three. Chris Nichol blazed over from a free kick just outside the box, Oliver saw a great fizzed cross cleared after a great penetrative run and Michael Paul forced a great save from the Groomsport keeper after finding himself in nosebleed territory on the edge of the Groomsport box.
Despite all the pressure and chances it was Groomsport who struck first with their first foray of note into the 1st Bangor half. A perfectly weighted ball in behind the high back line of 1st Bangor and a well-timed run saw the Groomsport striker gallop into the space and pick out a neat finish past Craig Bell to put Groomsport 1-0 up going into half time.
The start of the second half was a much more even affair and it was Groomsport who struck again after another ball over the top caused confusion in the 1st Bangor back four and after a bit of a scramble it fell invitingly for the Groomsport striker to slot home into an empty net and put Groomsport 2-0 up.
As Groomsport sat back and tried to protect their lead 1st Bangor began to completely dominate the game. Matthew Pollard and Chris Nichol controlling possession from the back and sending Mark Liddel racing up the line time and again to link with Aaron Caldwell on the left wing and pile on the pressure. This pressure eventually led to the start of the 1st Bangor comeback after Georgie Chelariu poked home after a great ball in from Mark Liddel from a corner.
1st Bangor continued to play their free-flowing attacking football and the equaliser was a perfect example after Chris Nichol expertly picked out the run of Ben Gourley with a delightful chip over the Groomsport defence for Gourley to control instantly and find a surperb finish past the onrushing Groomsport keeper.
With Groomsport starting to buckle, 1st Bangor sensed the game was there for the taking and they thought they had winner when the Groomsport keeper fumbled over the line only for the referee to deny the goal citing his lack of a clear view. The keeper did however make amends with a fine point blank save from Caldwell after clawing the ball back from over the line. It was then some further heroic defending from Groomsport to deny 1st Bangor again after Scott beat the Groomsport keeper to the ball to flight over a cross to Chelariu who saw his header cleared off the line by the Groomsport captain with a last ditch challenge.
However, with the clock ticking 1st Bangor eventually got the goal their play deserved. Davey Morrow, who came on for Michael Paul, adding another attacking threat and bringing a corner after being unfortunate not to pick out Olliver with a great cross. The resulting corner from Liddel brought a goal mouth scramble with Pollard in the right place at the right time to send the ball home to seal the win for 1st Bangor.
