Newington 2 - 3 1st Bangor

Great team performance by 1st Bangor to take all 3 points in a tough away fixture to Newington.

With the 1st Bangor team (severely depleted from a long list of injuries) literally arriving just in time for kick-off after a trek up towards the Newington pitch in Larne, they surprisingly started the brighter of the two sides with Colin Moore and Ross Morrow getting on the ball to good effect early on.  Indeed it was Colin Moore who played a defence-splitting pass for Chris Scott to run onto and slot home with his left boot to give 1st Bangor an early lead.

1st Bangor continued as they started playing some great football with the two Caldwells - Aaron and Isaac - continually combining to great effect on the left hand side.  So much so that Newington removed their right back at half time (only after Aaron let him out of his pocket!). The defence too looked comfortable with the 3 centre halves of Andy McLarnon, Michael Corkum and Ryan Patterson coping well with the lively front 2 of Newington, and the midfield two of Ross and Colin continuing to dominate against the strong midfield 3 of Newington.

This dominance paid off, 1st Bangor scored again early after the break, the training ground long throw from Matty and flick by Chris Scott finding Aaron Caldwell who hooked a sublime volley into the far corner to give 1st Bangor a 2 goal lead.

However, within minutes the lead was back down to 1 goal with Matty (who had a great game otherwise) unfortunate to head into his own goal from a well whipped in Newington corner.  This gave Newington the encouragement they needed and after getting themselves back into game they brought the game level with a smashing finish into the top corner from a tight angle.

1st Bangor however were not to be denied with Darren Beggs and the outstanding Aaron Caldwell continuing to press the Newington full backs.  It was this pressure that eventually led to the winner, with substitute Luke Kelly pressing the defence hard resulting in them gifting possession to Aaron wide on the left.  Aaron proceeded to deliver the perfect ball into the middle for Chris Scott to head home and seal the win for 1st Bangor in the final minutes to ecstatic scenes from the bench!

Despite some late late pressure from Newington, Neil Millar showed safe hands and plenty of guts to ensure 1st Bangor held onto the lead.

My Man of the Match goes to Aaron Caldwell today for another stunning performance on the left.  Next match is an away tie to Rathfrisland in the cup and 1st Bangor will be keen to build on two good early results so far this season.
